Section 1 · Introduction
Why Healthcare Private Equity Associations Matter
Private capital has become one of the most consequential forces shaping healthcare globally. In 2025, global healthcare private equity deal value exceeded $191 billion — a record — with deal volume logging its second-best year on record, according to Bain & Company's 2026 Global Healthcare Private Equity Report. Behind that capital are the firms, the professionals and the institutional frameworks that govern how private equity engages with the healthcare sector.
Two associations stand at the centre of that ecosystem. In Europe, the European Healthcare Investor Association (EHIA) is the largest association of private capital providers investing in healthcare companies across the continent — bringing together private equity firms, infrastructure investors, sovereign funds, family offices and advisers under a shared commitment to the sector. In the United States, the Healthcare Private Equity Association (HCPEA) — founded in 2010 as the first sector-focused trade association in private equity — represents over 100 member firms managing a combined total of over $10 trillion in assets, with investments in more than 1,500 companies.

The European Healthcare Investor Association (EHIA)
Founded 2021 · London · 60+ Members · Largest European Healthcare PE Association
The European Healthcare Investor Association (EHIA) is the largest association of private capital providers investing in healthcare companies in Europe. Founded in 2021, the Association has grown rapidly to almost 60 members including private equity firms, infrastructure investors, sovereign funds, foundations, family offices, advisers and other members of the healthcare investing community, all focused on building successful healthcare businesses.
Its aim is to facilitate deals and promote the sector through building community, convening content, advocating for the sector, providing networking and knowledge opportunities, delivering events and sector-focused market data and analysis, and promoting a better understanding of investors' contribution to the healthcare economy.
EHIA members take a long-term approach to investing in privately-held companies — injecting not only capital but dynamism, innovation and expertise. This commitment helps create healthy and sustainable companies, securing millions of jobs and delivering strong returns for leading pension funds and insurers whose members depend on them for their retirements.
Sarah Ward leads the strategic direction and day-to-day operational management of EHIA. In recognition of her impact, Sarah was honoured with inclusion on the Women in Trade Associations 2026 Power List for a second consecutive year. For investors and operators navigating the healthcare private capital landscape, membership of either or both associations signals a firm's sustained, serious commitment to the sector. Both maintain curated membership criteria, both serve as important convening points for deal flow and sector intelligence, and both provide valuable public resources including event programmes and member directories. Several major firms — including Nordic Capital, Partners Group, Novo Holdings, Cinven, CVC and EQT — are members of both.
What These Associations Mean for Healthcare Investors
Deal Flow and Relationships
The firms that constitute the EHIA and HCPEA member communities are responsible for the vast majority of significant healthcare PE transactions in their respective geographies. The EHIA member list reads as a who's who of European healthcare PE — from €23 billion firms like Astorg and Bridgepoint to specialist platforms like GHO Capital, Gilde Healthcare and Apposite. The HCPEA member list encompasses virtually every major US healthcare PE firm — from KKR, TPG, Blackstone and Bain Capital to specialist platforms including Frazier Healthcare, Linden Capital, Welsh Carson and Water Street.
Sector Signal
Membership of either association carries a meaningful signal. Both impose genuine criteria — HCPEA requires a minimum of two healthcare portfolio companies; EHIA investor membership requires active PE, infrastructure, sovereign fund, foundation, real estate or family office activity in healthcare. These member lists are not generic PE directories — they are curated rosters of firms with demonstrated, sustained commitment to the sector.
European vs US Capital
Nearly 20% of limited partners have a single sector exposure and it is to a handful of sectors, namely energy, technology and healthcare. The EHIA and HCPEA together represent a combined community of healthcare-focused PE firms managing trillions of dollars of capital. Understanding this capital geography is essential context for UK and European healthcare businesses seeking PE capital and for US funds seeking European deal flow.
